Marketing Agency Trends for 2014: three ways to stay ahead

7 January 2014

In an era of lightening-speed craze creation, marketing agency trends can appear -and disappear- overnight.

However, some can be clearly mapped out, which is why we asked Simone Moretta, co-founder of IMS, a boutique marketing agency and incentive and prize promotion specialist, to get her Mystic Meg on and look ahead to 2014

2013 was the year twerking made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, Andy Murray was finally accepted as British following his Wimbledon win and Jennifer Lawrence found a place in everyone's hearts by getting a bit tequila happy for her Silver Linings Playbook post-Oscar interview.

So how, begs my mulled wine-muddled mind, is 2014 going to top that?

#1 A Rio World Cup fever

World cup marketing

Football is my forte, well, if it has anything to do with the Gunners I know my stuff. However, even if you’ve had your head in the sand for the last few months you still will have heard that the Oscars of the football world is on its way to the sunny shores of Brazil. Yes everyone, I’m talking about the World Cup, that glorious event that dominates TV screens for a month and sends sales of BBQ’s and kegs of Carling (or Coca Cola) skyrocketing. In terms of running sports-themed promotional activity whilst the World Cup does not have the same rights in the UK that the Olympics 2012 had, it does enjoy some legal protections. Indeed Brazil has introduced strict new rules to prevent ambush marketing and to protect the interests of rights holders and licensees. Ultimately, what’s really important is that you get your promotional campaign approved by an expert so that you don’t fall foul of the beautiful game.

If you’re interested in entertaining groups of clients or hosting an incentive event we can put together a tailored evening of World Cup entertainment. How about hiring out a private section of a park to provide you with an open air live football screening experience complete with fully stocked bar, waiting staff, festival van catering and relaxing outdoor furniture? Get in touch to ensure you don’t spend the World Cup fruitlessly finding a bar with a spare uncomfortable stool and missing golden goals due to long toilet queues.

The film industry and general public love a good blockbuster and what screams entertainment other than a superhero in a colourful costume? In 2014 we welcome back Mr Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2; in this outing he meets his nemesis ‘Electro’ in New York. To celebrate his return we suggest a prize trip to the Big Apple to take in the sights loved by Peter Parker, this could include a fantastic photography tour of the city that never sleeps or a Parkour (almost Parker!) experience to sling you around the city. And yes my friends this is something we can and will organise for you!

Doing it for the girls we have Jennifer Lawrence (sorry two mentions in one article but I think we can all agree she is amazing!) hitting the big screen in both X-Men Days of Future Past and The Hunger Games Mockinjay Part 1. Now some may say she’s not a superhero but leading a revolution as Katniss in a tight outfit makes her a superhero in my eyes. With this in mind instead of going to an island that’s trying to kill you I would suggest escaping to an island like the ones we’ve recently sent prize winners too. This would include winning your own island for a week (we loved organising this) or sending prize winners to the beautifully unspoilt islands of the Maldives and Mauritius, this would be my natural destination to go and relax after a hard day’s work leading the revolution!

Finally where would we be if we weren’t keeping up with the fast moving trends in the technological and digital world? It perturbed me somewhat to recently read that a female tourist fell into Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay while browsing on Facebook – however, if you’re going to do this then you should definitely do it in style. Thanks to our very own Gadget Girl keeping us in the loop on all the up to these minute digital feats we suggest an Apple iPhone 5S - and thanks to its video calling and Siri voice activate assistant you’ll be able to call for help if you do in fact find yourself in a social media induced sticky situation.

Only time will tell what will trend in 2014. What will Miley Cyrus will do next, who will represent us in the Eurovision Song Contest and will Leonardo Dicaprio finally win a much-deserved Oscar? Let’s leave some things as a surprise.
